Clarity, and Lack Thereof

My Wife: “Do I need to worry about you when I go out tonight?”

Me: “Only that I might break down and... well... you know...”

Her: “That’s what I was talking about.”

Me: “Oh.”

Her: “Because I would be very disappointed if you didn’t save yourself for me.”

Me: “Does that mean when you come back—”

Her: “I didn’t say that.”

Me: “Oh.”

Her: “But I do want you to live up to your promise. The one you put in writing? The one we both signed? Remember?”

Me: “I remember.”

Her: “And?”

Me: “And I won’t disappoint you.”

Her: “Good. Because I would be angry, too, if you did. I’d get over it, of course, but you would need longer to get over the punishment. Are we clear?”

Me: “Yes, Ma’am.”

Her: “Good. So long as we’re clear.”

Me: [pause] “So what would the punishment be?”

Her: “Some things are better left unclear.”
